Gauchos del Mar are two brothers who surf where most people wouldn’t even think of surfing. From Patagonia to Antarctica, they travel through some of the world’s wildest and most fragile environments, using surf and documentary filmmaking to bring attention to the places they explore.
IT STARTED WITH A SCREENING. THEN MY ADVERTISING MUSCLES KICKED IN :)
When Matteo Meglioli asked me for ideas around a documentary screening in Bordeaux, I started thinking about it like a platform rather than an event. What if Antarctica stopped feeling like a faraway problem? What if we brought a piece of it into everyday life?
What if
the film could travel
beyond the screen?
What if we could take the reality of Antarctica, something that feels impossibly far away, and put it right in the middle of everyday life?
The answer was already inside the film.
The iconic surfboard of The Gauchos from the documentary Antarctica Domain One was encased in ice and left to melt in public space. As the ice disappeared, the urgency became impossible to ignore.
THE SURFBOARD BECAME THE MESSAGE.
AND STARTED TO TRAVEL THE WORLD.
The installation became a way into the documentary, the petition and the wider conversation around Antarctica. On the street, online and through media coverage, one melting surfboard kept pointing back to the same place.
BEFORE IT BECAME REAL.
This is the original AI demo I created to present the idea, before the first block of ice ever existed.
